Kinetics employees continue being active members of the community. On October 24, Kinetics Phoenix operations sponsored the Design Competition Challenge, organized by the Arizona State University Del E. Webb School of Construction and the Arizona State Chapter of Emerging Green Builders. The challenge was presented to high school students throughout Arizona, with the most sustainable and effective project to be exhibited at Greenbuild 2009, the convention and expo for green building construction best practices.
The goal of this competition was to educate high school students to learn, engage, and apply processes focused on sustainability. Michael Gonzalez, Mary Popplewell, Dan Naylor, Randy Allen and Brian Nehl served as industry mentors for six Liberty High School students and one team mentor, Dr. Brison Torbert.
The students were excited about the project, and their final engineering notebook exceeded 80 pages.
Thanks to Michael Gonzalez, Vice President, Kinetics Western Operations, the project provided the students with in-depth training in the LEED® certification process. After the students had worked the math for R-factors and cooling zones, their house was able to develop an internal temperature that was 28 degrees cooler than outside air.
As a result of the competition, the Liberty Lions captured the Gold Award (2nd Place -Overall). "We especially want to thank Kinetics for assisting with the project, whose help greatly improved our chances for success", noted Dr. Brison Torbert, the team's mentor. Their doghouse entry had a solar cooling system, water recycling system, roof garden and was completely made of recycled materials.
This project is one of ten other projects that was exhibited at Arizona Greenbuild 2009 on November 11-13, 2009 held in Phoenix, Arizona
